BEACON: PHASE 1
8 - 12 Feb 2023
Presented by The Opera People
Director: Edith Podesta
Venue: Esplanade Annexe Studio
The Opera People present a performance-workshop of our first ever full length opera commission: Beacon, composed by Jonathan Shin with a libretto by Joel Tan, and directed by Edith Podesta.
Klara, a scientist, embarks on a mission of a lifetime, journeying into outer space in search of a beacon, and the culmination of her life’s work. She is haunted by her abandonment of her partner Phoebe, an English professor. Onboard her vessel, Klara is tended to by a sentient AI named Wisdom and joined by two other scientists, Malachi and Antony, each with their own motives and entanglements. Her quest leads her deep into space and deeper into the mysteries of love, memory, and the yearnings that make us truly human.
In this workshop performance, presented as part of The Opera People’s Young Bards young artist series, hear excerpts of the opera performed by Kira Lim, Phoebe Chee, Rebecca Reavley, Zachary Dominguez, and Jonathan Charles Tay, accompanied my musicians from Wayfarer Sinfonietta, and conducted by Lien Boon Hua. The performance will be followed by a conversation and feedback session with Jonathan Shin and Joel Tan.

LA SONNAMBULA
1 - 3 Sept 2023
Presented by The Opera People
Director: Edith Podesta
Venue: Wild Rice @ Funan
The Opera People present the Singapore premiere of Vincenzo Bellini’s La sonnambula (The Sleepwalker).
In a luxury hotel, the staff gathers to celebrate the wedding of Amina and Elvino – she, an orphan raised by the hotel’s owner; he, a rich landowner. The celebrations are interrupted by the arrival of a visitor, Rodolfo, who isn’t all he claims to be. As the night unfolds, Rodolfo discovers that Amina has been hiding a secret condition. What ensues, is the unravelling of the deep frictions that have been bubbling under the surface.
Directed by Edith Podesta and featuring a cast of Singapore’s finest singers including Renata Hann Sungwon and Felicia Teo Kaixin as Amina, Jonathan Charles Tay as Elvino, Phoebe Chee as Lisa and Shawn Riccardo Liew as Rodolfo. Together with Wayfarer Sinfonietta led by Lien Boon Hua, this bold new take on La sonnambula is a masterful exploration of love, loss and community.

MAKE HANTUS GREAT AGAIN
28 - 30 Oct 2022
Presented by Teater Ekamatra
Director: Rizman Putra
Venue: Wild Rice @ Funan
Make Hantus Great Again is a satirical, supernatural, and political comedy. It follows the second ever General Elections of the Convention of Metaphysical Entities (COME), the national administrative body (and support group) for Singapore’s population of hantus (ghosts), pontianaks, vampires, jiang shis, and other supernatural beings. Each race sends forth a candidate, each with their own crazed agenda. Will the vampires bring an orgy of anarchy? Will the jinn impose their own brand of magical dictatorship? Or will the ghosts… make hantus great again? That’s for the audience to decide as their vote will determine the result of the most important elections of their lives… and afterlives.
